Saffron is dried vivid crimson stigmas of the saffron Crocus flower. There are only three saffron stigmas (threads) per flower. These threads must be picked by hand, which makes pure natural saffron that expensive. It takes about 170,000 blossoms or 510,000 hand-picked saffron stigmas to make a kilogram of saffron spice.
